Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum aminopenicillin antibiotic belonging to the beta lactam family. It is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria and has established activity against a range of Gram positive and selected Gram negative organisms.

Amoxicillin works by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin binding proteins involved in producing the peptidoglycan structure that gives bacterial cell walls their strength. Inhibition of this process weakens the cell wall and ultimately causes susceptible bacteria to rupture and die, making amoxicillin a bactericidal antibiotic.

Amoxicillin is commonly used for susceptible ear, nose and throat infections, lower respiratory tract infections, genitourinary infections, and skin and soft tissue infections. Depending on the organism and clinical setting, susceptible bacteria can include Streptococcus pneumoniae, other Streptococcus species, Enterococcus faecalis, Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli, and Proteus mirabilis.
