Acnegen contains isotretinoin, also known as 13 cis retinoic acid, a systemic retinoid derived from vitamin A. Acnegen is an international isotretinoin brand used for severe forms of acne, while isotretinoin itself is an established prescription treatment for severe nodular, inflammatory, and treatment resistant acne.

Isotretinoin addresses several of the major biological processes involved in acne development. One of its most significant effects is the suppression of sebaceous gland activity and sebum production. Excessive sebum contributes to blocked pores and creates an environment that promotes inflammatory acne.
