Minoxidil is an oral systemic vasodilator originally developed for the treatment of severe or treatment resistant hypertension. Oral minoxidil reduces peripheral vascular resistance by relaxing vascular smooth muscle, with its pharmacological activity linked to opening ATP sensitive potassium channels. A prospective study reported increases in hair growth after 24 weeks of once daily 5mg oral minoxidil, supporting continued research and off label clinical use of this strength for male pattern hair loss.

Another well recognized effect of oral minoxidil is hypertrichosis, or increased hair growth in areas outside the scalp. This effect is dose related and has been frequently reported in studies evaluating 5mg oral minoxidil for androgenetic alopecia.

Oral minoxidil should therefore be used under the direction of a qualified healthcare professional, particularly in individuals with cardiovascular disease, abnormal blood pressure, kidney disease or other conditions that may increase the risks associated with systemic vasodilation.
