Accutane™ contains isotretinoin, a systemic retinoid derived from vitamin A that is used for the treatment of severe, persistent forms of acne. Oral isotretinoin is generally reserved for patients with severe nodular or inflammatory acne that has not responded adequately to conventional treatments, including systemic antibiotics.

Isotretinoin works through several mechanisms involved in acne development. One of its most significant effects is a substantial reduction in sebaceous gland activity and sebum production. Excess sebum contributes to clogged pores and provides an environment that supports acne associated bacteria and inflammation. By reducing sebaceous gland size and activity, isotretinoin addresses one of the primary biological drivers of severe acne.

Isotretinoin also helps normalize keratinization within the hair follicle, reducing the formation of comedones and blocked pores. Its combined effects on sebum production, follicular plugging and inflammation explain why isotretinoin can produce substantial and sometimes long lasting improvement in patients with severe acne.
