Anastrozole, commonly known by the brand name Arimidex, is a potent, selective, non steroidal aromatase inhibitor. It works by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme responsible for converting androgens into estrogens, resulting in a significant reduction in circulating estrogen levels.
Its established medical use is primarily in the treatment of hormone receptor positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women, including adjuvant treatment of early stage disease and treatment of certain advanced or metastatic breast cancers.
Unlike selective estrogen receptor modulators, anastrozole does not primarily block estrogen receptors. Instead, it reduces estrogen synthesis itself by selectively inhibiting aromatase. This mechanism makes anastrozole an important compound in clinical settings where reducing estrogen exposure is therapeutically beneficial.
Each tablet contains 1mg of anastrozole, with 50 tablets supplied per pack. Because suppression of estrogen can affect bone mineral density and may be associated with other adverse effects, anastrozole should be used under appropriate medical supervision. Health Canada lists anastrozole 1mg products as prescription medications.
Although aromatase inhibitors are sometimes discussed in other hormone management contexts, such applications may be off label and should be assessed by a qualified healthcare professional. Store according to the product packaging and keep tablets protected from inappropriate heat, moisture, and access by children.
